Do you want to live and work legally in Spain? From May 20, 2025, foreigners will be able to apply for a new type of visa called a Work Search Visa, which allows them to reside in the country for up to 12 months to look for work, even without a previous job offer.
This is an excellent opportunity to work, especially in areas with a labor shortage.
And even better: this visa can be the first step towards Spanish citizenship, one of the fastest in Europe.
Who can apply?
This new visa is aimed at:
Brazilians and other foreigners who are children or grandchildren of Spaniards;
Foreign students who are finishing university in Spain;
Qualified professionals in areas that are difficult to cover (according to the Spanish government).
Requirements for the work-seeker's visa
The full process is still at the official announcement stage, but it is already known that some requirements will be demanded:
University or technical degree in an area with a shortage of professionals, on Spain's official list of “hard-to-cover professions”;
Proof of financial resources for the period of stay (up to 12 months);
Valid health insurance in Spain.
Valid passport;
Criminal record certificate from the country of origin and other countries where you have lived in the last 5 years;
Medical certificate following the International Health Regulations.
All documents must be apostilled and officially translated into Spanish.
Which areas have the best chance of employment?
According to the Spanish Ministry of Labor, the professions most in need include:
Construction (bricklayers, electricians);
Health (nurses, doctors, caregivers);
Technology (programmers, data specialists);
Hospitality and tourism (cooks, waiters);
Logistics and transport (drivers, forklift operators).
Spanish citizenship: faster than in Portugal
One of the biggest advantages of this visa is the easier access to Spanish citizenship through legal residence.
Main requirements:
2 years of legal and continuous residence in Spain;
Good civic conduct and no criminal record;
Integration into Spanish society (assessed in an interview and language and culture tests);
2 years of tax contributions during residence (a criterion applied in practice by the authorities to demonstrate economic and social integration).
In other words, it is possible to apply for Spanish citizenship in just 2 years, as long as you are regularly registered with the Social Security system and pay taxes.
Legal and practical tips
As a lawyer specializing in immigration and European citizenship, I recommend:
Organize all your documentation, including diplomas, certificates and attestations that have already been apostilled and translated;
Search for vacancies in the areas of shortage and prepare a CV adapted to the Spanish market;
Take a Spanish course, as the language is required at the citizenship stage;
Consult a lawyer or specialist to ensure that all the criteria are met legally.
Let's build your life project in Europe together with legal certainty and strategic planning.
